Job Purpose:      To provide risk mitigation and duty savings to the company for import shipments by monitoring and ensuring accuracy of import entries, as well as ensuring expedient clearance of import shipments.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for import compliance, providing advice, guidance and documenting import compliance policies and procedures, working with Caterpillar’s Trade Center of Excellence as required.

  • Ensure that the activities of the business unit comply with applicable import laws and regulations, as well as requirements set forth in the enterprise customs compliance manual, including annual review deliverables to the Trade COE.

  • Responsible for all trade operations activities and special programs, including coordination of HTS classification requests, duty suspension, valuation activities and questions, compliance with free trade agreement-related requirements. Liaise with manufacturing facility contacts as well as management of third-party providers such as brokers and freight forwarders.

  • Support, in partnership with the Trade COE, internal and external inquiries, investigations, audits, or disclosures regarding the company's import compliance activities in the region. Based on audit findings, this role will assist with root cause analysis and support resolution of compliance issues as needed.

  • Manage all import shipments working with our inter-company partners, customers, and suppliers, including coordinating with freight forwarders. Conduct transactional testing and manage key performance metrics for brokers and forwarders.

  • Support the trade compliance related recordkeeping program and reconciliation, organization, and maintenance.

  • Advises management (including attorneys, legal contract specialists, projects managers, managing directors, business development managers, logistics managers and facilities engineering managers) on issues associated with the global corporate insurance program, as well as supporting negotiation of insurance clauses.

  • Maintain standard insurance requirements for third party contracts and leases and review real estate, supplier, and other contracts with third parties to ensure adequate indemnifications and insurance protection for the company.

  • Provide highly specialized, technical support to global legal group and senior management in all the countries SPM does business as risk management/insurance SME analyzing and interpreting corporate sales and vendor/supplier contracts principally to assure adequate insurance protection for the company.

  • Support negotiations with major customers where applicable, regarding contractual insurance language/coverage placements/policy administration/invoicing/certificates/claims.


  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Accounting, Finance, Audit, Risk Management, Business, Logistics or a related field.

  • Incumbents have usually gained 3 to 5 years of compliance experience and are able to perform complex assignments. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of complex federal import regulations including but not limited to the customs regulations, Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), free trade agreements, supply chain security program requirements and other global trade programs.

  • Compliance Certification and/or Customs Broker License

  • Strong planning and organizational skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work well within a diverse group environment

  • Sound decision making skills and proactive problem-solving abilities

  • Requires a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills.
