Job Description

Responsibilities of the P&C Team Lead include:

  • Ownership for all aspects of machine performance, in both new product development and existing field products
  • Lead team of virtual product development resources to test and validate design concepts
  • Coach and mentor team of machine controls developers
  • Understand machine application profiles as inputs to the development process
  • Work with product support and region teams to support customer inquiries
  • Own and grow virtual product model garage, developing and validating new models as required
  • Support machine controls development for new product introductions, working across matrix to create and validate machine controls

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum
  • 9-13 years in progressive assignments to gain experience in controls development and virtual validation
  • 2+ years with dynamic system simulation tools, including Matlab suite of tools
  • 2+ years with previous machine controls development experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree or greater in an Engineering field
  • Experience with Hydraulic Mining Shovel product line
  • Previous use of Dynasty simulation tool for virtual product development
  • Knowledge of Caterpillar product development processes
  • Understanding of loading machine applications within mining environments
  • Must be an effective communicator, comfortable working in a global engineering environment


JOB PURPOSE: To direct and participate in the concept and design of complex engineering product or process projects for release to production in a manner to ensure products provide superior performance, durability, quality, and serviceability. JOB RELATED STATISTICS: Varies JOB DUTIES: This position represents the journey level position within design engineering. The key role of a Sr. Engineer – Design is that of contributor to the planning and delivery of a project. This position will be accountable for contributing to the concept, development, and design of complex components, subsystems, or processes. This position performs complex analysis work, identifies design problems, and resolves problems. Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to team leadership, the major focus of the job is on technical delivery. Incumbents may work more directly with different units, suppliers, customers, and/or other teams. This requires the ability to communicate technical information in a concise and accurate manner. Decisions made may affect the project team and its delivery of the project. Decisions may significantly impact on negotiations with suppliers, leveraging new technologies, warranty, costs, sales, and customer perception. Success factors for the Sr. Engineer – Design include demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of engineering concepts. Major challenges facing incumbents are meeting goals for cost, reliability, and performance, and managing multiple priorities. This position must keep up-to-date on changing customer needs as the project progresses, stay current with new technology, and provide guidance and direction on the project to less experienced engineers, technologists, and technicians. Incumbents may be expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery. Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: design and promote new components and sub processes; perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; evaluate new products or processes; perform product maintenance; keep up to date on new technologies or develop new technologies; communicate technical information to customers, team members, suppliers and other units; and support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and suppliers. Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. Key skills to be developed at this level are failure prediction and management, technology time/cost analysis, spatial design, conceptual design, practical application of theory, knowledge of the NPI process, and communication skills. BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE: Requires a bachelor degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum plus 9-12 years of experience or a master degree in an Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum plus 6-8 years of experience or a doctorate degree plus 1-2 years of experience. Incumbents must have demonstrated excellent analytical skills and the ability to perform complex assignments. Requires a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills. Must have ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well as employees in other units, customers, and suppliers.
