The Caterpillar Oil & Gas and Marine Division has an exciting opportunity for a Digital System Engineer in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In this role you will direct and participate in the concept, design, delivery, and support of complex data integrations with Marine customer assets and equipment enabling predictive analytics and Customer Value Agreements.
Conceptualize, develop, and design industrial data integrations for Marine equipment.
Identify and define requirements for Marine telematics and data transmission.
Coordinate with and support the Marine CVA delivery team.
Support dealer development through training and identifying best practices for Marine digital deployments.
Maintain technical liaison between Caterpillar and dealers; design and promote new components and sub processes.
perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; evaluate new products or processes; perform product maintenance; keep up to date on new technologies or develop new technologies.
communicate technical information to customers, team members, suppliers and other units; and support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and suppliers.
Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology.
Key skills to be developed at this level are failure prediction and management, technology time/cost analysis, spatial design, conceptual design, practical application of theory, knowledge of the NPI process, and communication skills.
Conduct dealer and customer visits to personally provide expert technical assistance on urgent field issues for digital products and applications.
Coordinate with other digital product and application support teams on the long-term design and development of product support strategies.
Identify, investigate and resolve significant field issues to maintain and improve assigned digital product performance.
Issue investigation; statistical analyses, physical testing and analysis of application failures, returned parts, development of quick field fixes, suggested design or manufacturing improvements, etc.
Resolution of commitments; formally document issues and provide follow-up on the resolution process with industry and development teams.
Conduct field follow programs to evaluate overall customer acceptance of new digital products and applications.
Support Serviceability Audits on NPI for digital products and applications. Provide input for setting targets for digital product and application reliability, durability and serviceability to be stated in the functional specifications.
Reduce the warranty cost, churn rate and customer impact of digital product and application issues; initiate, develop and cost justify field rework and product support programs.
Support development of service publications to announce significant digital product and application improvements and temporary field fix information to key dealer personnel, through appropriate communication channels.
Stay current with all Marine digital products and applications, also develop and maintain a digital products and application knowledge base and training materials.
Support division's business plan. Develop training materials within budget.
Provide digital product and application support to Distribution Services Divisions (DSDs), dealers, Corporate Account Managers, subsidiary service groups, warranty technicians, sales development, product support development, test & evaluation, research, service training, etc.
Bachelor degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum or 6-8 years of relevant experience.
Demonstrated excellent analytical skills and the ability to perform complex assignments
Basic understanding of common SCADA protocols in the Marine space:
Basic understanding of various electrical communication standards
Experience with Caterpillar telematics products a plus
Experience and understanding of wireless transmission technologies applicable to Marine assets
Experience and familiarity with control systems and electrical data interfaces common in Marine industrial environments
Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages:
Self-starter with strong leadership skills
Ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well as employees in other units, customers, and suppliers.
