JOB PURPOSE:

The Advanced Power Products Group within the Large Power Systems Division has an opening for an Engineering Technical Steward for hybrid energy systems integration. This position will be located in either Mossville, Illinois; Lafayette, Indiana; or Peterborough, England. In this role, you will serve as an experienced consultant and company expert in a hybrid energy systems development where decisions and recommendations are recognized as authoritative and that have an important impact on extensive engineering activity.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

This position is globally recognized within Caterpillar as an expert in electrical and hybrid energy systems, and the incumbent may be gaining some recognition externally within the industry or the area of expertise. This position plays a global leadership role in the particular technology within Caterpillar and is proactive in nature.  At this level, individuals demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature engineering judgment as they anticipate and solve unprecedented engineering problems, determine program objectives and requirements, organize programs and projects, contribute to global engineering teams, and develop standards and guides for diverse engineering activities.  Projects are typically complex and may integrate similar technologies and strategies over multiple applications. Individuals at this level may potentially lead technology change and have an impact on the industry.

Representative activities of this position include: conceiving and planning investigations of broad areas of considerable novelty and importance to the overall engineering program for which engineering precedents are currently lacking; consulting extensively with associates and others, with a high degree of reliance placed on the incumbent’s scientific interpretation and advice; contributing inventions, new designs or techniques that are regarded as major advances in the field; initiating and maintaining extensive contacts with key engineers and officials of other organizations and companies, requiring skilled persuasion and negotiation of critical issues.  The incumbent is expected to consistently act with a global perspective and impact.

As described in the Caterpillar Product Development System, Technical Stewards manage the body of knowledge used in developing towering technical competence. In short, the Technical Steward owns global knowledge management for their technology. This includes responsibility for mentoring and developing others, particularly new members of their technical community. This position is also responsible for developing training materials in their area of expertise, developing and/or leading the development of documentation of processes and knowledge (e.g. customer application Books of Knowledge, design guides, standard test procedures, etc.), developing technical successors to their expertise, and personally mentoring others as needed. The knowledge management role requires the Technical Steward to play a key role in the protection of Caterpillar’s intellectual property. This position is accountable for properly classifying and restricting access to Caterpillar technical information related to their technology.

Decisions made at this level are far reaching and affect the teams with whom they consult, Caterpillar business and future markets. Decisions may have significant impact on things such as warranties, patents, leveraging new technologies, sales and customer perception. Decisions may need variants because of the global nature of the business.  Some of the key challenges facing this position are: leveraging knowledge to others; balancing short-term thinking against long-term strategy; developing strategic partners; delivering state-of-the-art design, development, and research projects; as well as consistently acting in a proactive manner to advance their technology.

Key areas of responsibility will include some/all of the following: Communicate technology to customers, other team members, suppliers, and other business units.  Perform needs analysis and initiate ideas.  Collaborate with, consult to and support other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and suppliers globally.  Proactively concept, design, evaluate and promote new products, processes, technologies and techniques.  Represent the company externally.

Technical leadership skills and ability to concept and sell ideas is paramount at this level. This position must not only keep up-to-date on technology but be able to apply that technology as well. Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast or ahead of technology. Technical skill development will focus on technology time/cost analysis, failure analysis and problem solving, and development of acceptance criteria.  They must consider the impacts and nature of their technologies within the scope of a global business.  Building relationships with other technical personnel, both in and out of Caterpillar, are important.
