If you like being on the leading edge of product development and improvement, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join Caterpillar as a Laboratory Support Technologist supporting the development of our Earthmoving machines.

As the Laboratory Support Technologist,  you can expect to:
  • Instrument the machines & components tested in the shake lab or, as needed, the Peoria Proving Ground.
  • Set up data acquisition systems.
  • Developing drive files for the shake tables.
  • Operate & maintain the shake tables.
  • Perform daily inspections.
  • Documenting results in formal reports including failures.
  • Assist mechanics in the lab.
  • Weld and repair components, when needed.
  • Prepare strain gauges for wireless fatigue nodes. 
  • Install wireless fatigue nodes & instrumentation in the field.


To be successful in this role, you must bring (Basic Qualifications):

  • At least 5 years’ instrumentation experience applying strain gauges, accelerometers, and thermo couples, to machines & components
  • At least 5 years’ experience soldering strain gauges & wire harnesses.
  • At least 5 years’ experience using eDAQ data acquisition systems & SoMat TCE
  • At least 5 years’ experience operating multi-axis shake tables using MTS software including RPC, Station Builder, & Station Manager
  • At least 1 year of welding experience including stick, MIG, & TIG
  • At least 1 year’ experience applying LORD Micro-Strain wireless sensors including strain gauges & accelerometers
  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft software including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, & Teams
Top candidates will also bring:
  • An associate’s degree, or higher, from an accredited institution.
  • Mechanic experience.
  • Experience operating cranes, aerial lifts, & forklifts.
  • Experience using DAT-K, CAT ET, LORD Sensor Connect, & Infield.
