Caterpillar is partnering with the Great Promise Partnership/Work-Based Learning programs in the State of Georgia to offer local high school students an opportunity to start building a manufacturing career.  While working at Caterpillar Inc., you will work in an environment that supports excellence. High School Apprentices will work in either assembly or logistics functional areas to safely build excavators or small track-type tractors. This is an hourly position starting at $10.95/hr.  Must be a Junior or Senior at a Georgia County high school participating in the Work-Based Learning program to be considered.

Assembly job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Uses various tools provided in the work area to perform assembly duties
  • Mechanical job duties may include rotation to various positions within the job function area to perform related activities.
  • Seeks out paint defects and may perform paint touch up as needed
  • Follows documented procedures standard work, routings, and blueprints to perform safe and  defect free assembly and adjustment of components and prime product
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned
  • Follows and utilizes CPS principles of 5S, Continuous Improvement Idea Reporting, Waste Elimination, and Standard Work
  • Keeps work area in a clean and orderly condition

Logistics job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform material handling and warehousing functions as required
  • Order filling, processing, storing/ picking of parts, materials, equipment and supplies
  • Operating automated packaging equipment, paint line operation, shipping and receiving.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned
  • Follows and utilizes CPS principles of 5S, Continuous Improvement Idea Reporting, Waste Elimination, and Standard Work
  • Keeps work area in a clean and orderly condition

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be a state of Georgia High School Junior or Senior at a school in partnership with the Work-Based Learning program
  • Must have support of parent or legal guardian
  • Must have reliable transportation to the Caterpillar Athens plant
  • Must be able to work during school year either 6 am-10 am or 12 pm-4 pm
  • Must be 16 years of age or older by January 1, 2021

Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):


  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods
  • Ability to perform repetitive operations
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.


  • Must be able to frequently lift and carry boxes weighing up to 35 pounds for intervals of 15-30 minutes
  • Infrequently lift and carry boxes weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Work at heights of up to 20 feet from the floor
  • Work in an environment with frequently changing temperatures
  • Walk, squat and bend over for intervals of 15-30 minutes 

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Ability to read/write and interpret documents
  • Experience working with lean manufacturing principles such as following standard work, continuous improvement, eliminating process waste, and 5S
  • Basic computer skills such as operating a computer in a Windows based environment and Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Experience working in a team based environment
  • Experience working in manufacturing
  • Knowledge of standard assembly tools

Additional Information: Resumes are highly encouraged for all applicants.  This is an hourly apprenticeship position with a wage of $10.95/hour.  Apprentices will work approximately 40 hours/week in summer and 20 hours/week during school year. Apprentices must be able to work during the school year either 6 am-10 am or 12 pm-4 pm to be considered.
