JOB PURPOSE: Caterpillar’s Treasury team uses quantitative methods such as business simulations, data mining, and advanced statistical techniques to solve problems. The Data Scientist I contributes to this mission by leveraging his or her quantitative analysis, data management, modeling, and/or data visualization skills as an individual contributor to project teams tasked with solving business problems.
Caterpillar’s Corporate Treasury team uses quantitative techniques to solve problems. Typical problems include combining data sets in unique ways to identify new insights for the business, creating scenario and what-if analysis to manage foreign exchange and commodity risks, and developing machine learning models to identify financial risks. In addition, analytics experts also provide assistance to high-profile division projects.
The key role of this position is to be the analytics lead for the global Corporate Treasury department and an individual contributor to a variety of departmental analytics projects. The Data Scientist I is expected to become familiar with Corporate Treasury’s processes and procedures, and become an expert in extracting insights from Treasury’s systems and data. Work is typically coordinated by a project or team lead but the Data Scientist I will bring analytics subject matter expertise to each assignment. Decisions on routine, limited risk issues that may affect the project team, suppliers or internal customers may be made by this position. Challenges include meeting expectations in delivering results, learning to consider alternative courses of actions, making timely decisions and developing communication skills.
Individuals in this position might expect to have several assignments allowing them to gain experience on multiple projects. They will be expected to apply theory and concept in contributing to the solution in the assigned area. In addition, they will be tasked with coaching and training the global Treasury team in the basic skills of data extraction, transformation and visualization.
The job function may include data collection and analysis; development, validation, application, and refinement of statistical models; application of related digital technologies in processing both the inputs and outputs from the models. Examples of expected analytical tasks include scenario and what-if analysis on a portfolio of foreign exchange derivatives or creating a visualization of the output of a derivative model in a digital technology such as Power BI.
The Data Scientist I demonstrates an expanded breadth of knowledge and the ability to handle basic issues independently. The incumbent demonstrates very good communication skills; above average planning and organization, teamwork, and decision-making skills; a strong concern for customers; and develops strong knowledge of Caterpillar Inc. and its financial systems and data.
