Job Description


JOB PURPOSE:  To serve as an experienced, individual contributor on projects and assignments that are complex in nature and that support and enhance Caterpillar product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability. Virtual Product Development (Simulation) division in India comprising group of 150+ highly educated and talented engineers functioning from multiple locations in line with corporate global footprint strategy and providing simulation support to Caterpillar’s global business units in Structural, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Engine and Machine Performance Simulation etc. areas.


JOB RELATED STATISTICS:  Experienced individual contributor with ability to execute very complex simulation software development projects individually and/or in a team environment with accountability on quality, velocity and cost.


JOB DUTIES:  This position represents the journey level position for engineering simulation software development related functions.  This person has built significant, deep expertise in simulation software development.  The key role of a Engineer - Performance/Simulation/Application is that of an individual contributor.  This position will be accountable for software requirements gathering and analysis, object-oriented design, C/C++ programming, quality assurance, project planning and tracking, configuration and change management, documentation, product maintenance, end user support, application training, and depending on experience and interest, project consulting.  Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to team leadership, the major focus of the job is on software development and support. 


Success factors for the Engineer - Performance/Simulation/Application include demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of software engineering concepts.  Major challenges facing incumbents are meeting goals for software quality, performance and ease of use.  This position must keep up-to-date on changing customer needs as the project progresses, stay current with new software standards, and provide guidance and direction on the project to less experienced software developers.  Incumbents may be expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery.



The Engineer - Performance/Simulation/Application must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of software standards and architecture.  




The candidature for this engineer position must have a Graduate/Post Graduate degree from a reputed institution, in an accredited engineering curriculum (Computer Science/Information Technology/Electronics/Electrical/Mechanical) plus 8-10 years of Software development experience. The candidate will be part of the Machine Structures Simulation team which develops and supports In-house/home grown Engineering Simulation Software used for 1D and 3D Machine, Engine and System Performance and Hardware-in-the-Loop(HIL)/Software-in-the-Loop(SIL) simulations.

 Job Location: Chennai/Bangalore



Key Skill Set:

  • 8+ years of software development experience using C, C++, Python, in a Windows operating system environment.
  • Experience with Object-Oriented Analysis (OOA) / Object-Oriented Design (OOD) techniques. Experience in GUI design and development using Qt
  • Experience in using Microsoft Visual Studio, GIT and SVN
  • Knowledge of Agile and Dev/Ops
  • Experience in technical mentoring and leading teams


Preferred Skill Sets:

  • Experience in successfully leading complex software development projects
  • Knowledge of Linux, parallel computing (OpenMP) and numeric/symbolic computation
  • Experience in engineering simulation software development and support.
