Job Description


This position provides in-depth knowledge on U.S. domestic tax matters for companies within the Caterpillar enterprise.  Primary areas of focus will include strategic planning and advising businesses and regional tax teams on U.S. federal and state income tax impacts of transactions.  The individual will lead or be a technical advisor on planning projects and complex initiatives, as well as improvements of tax processes, especially related to U.S. tax reform. 

In addition to being a major contributor to complex tax planning strategies, the role will review compliance activities and positions. The individual will ensure financial reporting integrity including compliance with tax laws, optimization of value creation and profitability, a strong control environment and the achievement of other financial and non-financial objectives from the enterprise perspective.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

*Reporting directly to this position are US domestic planning & technical roles. 
*Tax Planning and Advisory – Provides specific and actionable guidance on tax issues involved in internal structural and transactional planning. Identifies tax-beneficial opportunities and implements work plans to achieve these benefits. Works with internal and external resources to create, implement and manage complex tax positions, integrating both US and foreign consequences.  Provides tax advice and education to managers in Global Tax, Corporate Accounting, Corporate Treasury, business units and subsidiaries. 
*Legislative Activity – Monitors, analyzes and determines financial impact of critical proposed tax laws and regulations to Caterpillar. Assists Senior Management with communications to company leadership and external coalitions to influence the course of legislation. 
*Mergers and Acquisitions – Provides strategic tax advice regarding organizational and operational structures including implementation, integration, and post-acquisition/divestiture consulting. 
*Audit Activity – Provides strategic tax advice and guidance in discussions and negotiations with tax auditors.  Reviews responses to IRS inquiries and analyzes technical positions in examinations. Works with senior leaders to develop and present strategies and arguments for tax appeals. 
*Risk Management – Guides the development, maintenance and updating of control procedures and policies related to US domestic tax positions. 
*Tax Compliance – Provides strategic leadership on US tax reporting requirements. Serves a senior advisor on complex and comprehensive issues. Reviews material US federal and state tax positions or results. 
*The position manages a work unit of primarily management/professional employees where review of subordinate work is required as well as training, developing and mentoring. The position is responsible for personnel issues and performance evaluation of direct reports. 
*Leads projects involving complex issues or problems, which require careful analysis and diagnosis. Problems are often unique and solutions may require original approaches. Sponsors projects which may modify existing approaches or develop new solutions. 


Basic Qualifications:

* Seasoned manager with more than ten years progressively responsible experience in public accounting, law firm, and/or large multinational organization

* Strong background in US federal income taxation, especially consolidated return rules and Subchapter C

* College/university degree

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

* Experience in accounting methods, financial products, Sec. 163(j), inventory, and R&D credit preferred

* Experience in state income tax, particularly impacts of reorganizations/business transactions

* Ability to model scenarios to understand how transactions will impact ETR, cash taxes, tax provision, etc.

* Certified Public Accountant, Master of Science in Taxation, or JD/LLM certification, or equivalent experience 
* Strong communicator with the ability to interact with businesses and cross-functional finance personnel
