Job Title: Lead Engineer - Engine Application Software

Division: Integrated Components and Solutions
Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

Salary: £53,500-£60,000 (Depending on Experience)

Benefits: 

25 days annual leave
18% bonus (at target)

Company car allowance of £6960/year

The Integrated Components and Solutions team offers some of the most exciting engineering roles within the Caterpillar global organisation. Working on the development and integration of electronic and electrical systems, within multiple Caterpillar products, provides the opportunity to work with multiple disciplines within the organisation and across the Globe.

The integration of the latest Electronics and Electrical technology helps differentiate Caterpillar products from its competitors by enabling exceptional performance and value to the customer. Our engine systems control air and fuel delivery with millisecond precision to maximise performance and minimise exhaust emissions. Our integrated machine systems control all aspects of construction machine operation (engine, transmission, hydraulic systems), provide the human-machine interface (operator controls and information displays), and constantly monitor and communicate position, operation, diagnostic and prognostic information to enable machine automation, improved productivity and enhanced serviceability.

The Opportunity:

 

Due to an expansion of the team’s responsibilities, we have an exciting opportunity for an Application Software Team Lead within our Advanced Components and Technology (AC&T) Division. AC&T is responsible for electronic and electrical systems development across all CAT engine and machine platforms. Based in Peterborough, the European Division of AC&T works with all CAT’s European facilities to develop and apply advanced technology to the control of our highly integrated engines and machines. With unrivalled levels of vertical integration within the industry, AC&T’s systems help to maximise the customer value and efficiency of Caterpillar’s end products, whilst minimising owning and operating costs.

 

This opportunity will be based in the Engine Systems and Application Software Team, which is responsible for development and implementation of electrical and electronic control systems for diesel engines developed by Caterpillar in the UK. As the Application Software Team Lead, the successful applicant for this position will join the Team and be responsible for leading and executing on a portfolio of engine system projects.

 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop, manage, communicate and execute a Software Release Schedule for all stakeholders.
  • Solicit, capture and revise the functional requirements of the engine electronic application features
  • Coordinate with software developers to develop the relative application features
  • Ensure Software verification is suitably performed
  • Provide technical support to queries related to functionality
  • Investigate/analyse/troubleshoot/resolve any reported quality issues.
  • Develop a quality plan to ensure continuous quality improvement (Built-in-Quality)
  • Raise, propose and lead changes or improvements to related development processes.
  • Review and support technical publications, ensuring that technical contents are relevant and correct.
  • Facilitate and lead FMEA development to mitigate technical risks from engine application software

Qualifications

Candidates will have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:

 
  • With a strong technical background you will have a technical degree in a mechanical, electronic, electrical, control systems or automotive engineering discipline - consideration will be given to other qualifications or significant relevant experience in lieu of this.
  • Proven Team Lead or Senior Engineer with the ability to successfully execute and lead a number of software development projects, at one time
  • Technical background in systems development, software, analysis and/or integration (electronics or mechanical)
  • Ability to define and capture the customers’ detailed functional requirements and technical specifications
  • ·       Good Electrical and Electronic knowledge with a track record of hands on ‘fault finding’ and problem solving of both products and innovative solutions for related processes
  • A team player and a self-starter with ability to initiate and take independent action
  • An excellent communicator with ability to build good working relationships both in person and with Global teams
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and organise complex and parallel activities to meet customers’ expectations
  • Coaching and mentoring skills to support team members 

Candidates may have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles: 

  • Previous Technical Lead experience
  • Previous knowledge or experience in developing control systems or embedded software for diesel engines, construction equipment or automotive applications is desirable.
  • Previous experience in using HIL test equipment is desirable (preferably dSpace)
  • Comfortable using collaboration tools to work with a global team of resources.
