Location: Peterborough
Salary & Benefits: £20,022.00, Share Scheme, Pension, 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, Paid Tuition fees, employee discount scheme.

What do we do?
At the Peterborough facility we design, develop and manufacture of industrial engines for both the CAT and Perkins brands. You will be working as part of a global engineering team helping to create sustainable, world-changing solutions that impact lives around the globe. Caterpillar owns a complex portfolio of brands.

What experiences can we offer you?
This 5-year level 6 apprenticeship scheme will enable you to grow and develop your capabilities. Through combining university-based learning with on-the-job training you’ll learn the latest skills and knowledge from our experts.

Engineering apprentices at Caterpillar are put on rotations through different engineering departments within the business from product design and engineering right through to customer integration. Rotations are identified based on developmental needs and business requirements. Each rotation lasts around six months but could vary in some cases. At the end of second year  the trainees are placed in one of the functional areas.We will look to find the best fit for you, with consideration given to your experiences, your ambitions and current business needs.

Our Component Engineering team is split across 5 functional areas mainly: Base Engine, Air & Fuel systems, Aftertreatment systems, Current Products , Core Process and New Technology and Engineering Design Services . The team is responsible for designing and developing world class components to meet the current and future emissions legislations, develop new components and technologies and also for optimising engineering processes by reducing waste and identifying areas to improvement. Throughout the apprenticeship you will have an opportunity to:

  • support a vast network of engineers and specialists learn from their experiences
  • collaborate with internal and external partners, suppliers and customers to help with the development and integration of Diesel Engines and associated components.
  • support the resolution of product quality & customer related technical queries.

In the process, you will get an opportunity to collaborate with people across the globe including our vast footprint of suppliers other CAT facilities or customers. We will provide you with a mentor to support you throughout your professional development.

Our Service and Customer Support team work to make our customers more successful every day. There are various departments whose role is to be the primary interface with our customers on our products managing them from engine installation all the way through to in the field with an end user. Day to day duties will include but not be limited to:
• answering technical questions from customers
• managing engine service and quality issues
• producing engine service training material and literature
• managing warranty claims
• visiting customers to provide installation and field support
• continually strive to improve the quality of our Products and Services

Your working week will also include time to study that will either be located at our Peterborough facility or at the facility of our partnered training provider allowing you to network and share experiences with other students further enhancing your learning.

You will finish this apprenticeship with a nationally recognised qualification that could provide you with a competitive difference at no cost to you. Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will be offered a position within our world-class team with plenty of opportunity for long-term progression. Many of our former apprentices now occupy senior management roles within our organisation, as career development is the foundation to all our apprenticeship schemes. We will also encourage you to apply for Professional Engineering Status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

We also ask that those applying for this apprenticeship have:
 Are interested in mechanical and/or electrical engineering.
 Have experience in a Manufacturing environment (Desirable)
 Have experience in a service environment (Desirable)

For this apprenticeship, the minimum requirement or expected requirement is to have:
• 5 GCSEs (or academic equivalents) at Grade C/Level 4 or above. Must include: Maths, English & a Science or Engineering subject
Plus at least one of the following:
• 96 points from 3 A-Levels – Maths & Science subject
• Merit, Merit, Merit in an Extended Diploma or National Extended Diploma in Engineering or a related subject
NB: You can apply with predicted grades. If you’re successful at the interview stage, the job offer will be conditional on you achieving the required grades before September.
