At the Peterborough facility we design, develop and manufacture of industrial engines for both the CAT and Perkins brands. This 5-year level 6 apprenticeship scheme will enable you to grow and develop your capabilities. Through combining university-based learning with on-the-job training you’ll learn the latest skills and knowledge from our experts and develop in the following key areas of our business:
Our Machine & Engine Electronic Systems team is looking to recruit trainees to join the team. The team is a regional design centre providing Electronic and Electrical system engineering support for CAT Divisions developing regional and worldwide products in Europe. The division is primarily a systems engineering group, integrating components and sub-systems developed by the wider CAT Electronics organisation with locally developed components and software to create customised solutions for Power Systems and Machines.
• The team also provides quality, reliability and product support services for CAT Electronics systems and components in the region.
• The full range of activities undertaken by engineers working within the team includes: system specification, embedded software design and development, control system modelling and analysis, component selection and validation, system level development and validation, product health analysis and quality issue resolution.
• We use rigorous processes and tools to manage our projects and ensure we safely meet project requirements, product regulations and commercial goals on time.
You’ll be fully supported throughout the apprenticeship scheme by a rigorous development programme that includes study for a relevant qualification and buddying/mentoring. Your working week will also include time to study that will either be located at our Peterborough facility or at the facility of our partnered training provider allowing you to network and share experiences with other students further enhancing your learning. Our current training provider for this apprenticeship is De Montfort University. As part of this programme trainees are required to attend university on either a day release (1-2 days per week) or block week basis during the academic year. Trainees will be required to travel. What happens after my Apprenticeship?
You will finish this apprenticeship with a nationally recognised qualification that could provide you with a competitive difference at no cost to you. On successful completion of this apprenticeship you are very likely to be offered a position within our world-class team with plenty of opportunity for long-term progression. Many of our former trainees now occupy senior management roles within our organisation as career development is the foundation to all our apprenticeship schemes.
Depending on the needs of the business, you may also be offered the chance to complete additional qualifications. We’ll also encourage you to apply for Professional Engineering Status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Be diligent, with a focus on quality and have the ability to apply initiative to work independently or as part of a team
For this apprenticeship, the minimum requirement or expected requirement is to have:
• 5 GCSEs (or academic equivalents) at Grade C/Level 4 or above. Must include: Maths, English & a Science or Engineering subject
Plus at least one of the following:
• 96 points from 3 A-Levels – Maths & Science subject
Merit, Merit, Merit in an Extended Diploma or National Extended Diploma in Engineering or a related subject
NB: You can apply with predicted grades.
If you’re successful at the interview stage, the job offer will be conditional on you achieving the required grades before September 2020.
