With 645,000 square feet under one roof, the Johannesburg distribution center is Caterpillar’s largest parts facility in Africa.  The facility is storing over 110,000 different part numbers to deliver the right part, at the right place, at the right time. 

Parts are shipped to regional dealers & customers, and other Caterpillar distribution centers in the world via different modes: truck, air, parcel, ocean.

The Transportation Analyst’s main responsibility is to determine the best methods for transporting parts with optimum quality, velocity and cost.

He/she is responsible for managing transportation processes to ensure they meet customer requirements. 

The person will work together with many other teams like operations, traffic, customers services, procurement, carriers, forwarders, dealers and customers.

The role is reporting into the EAME (Europe, Africa, Middle East) Transportation Team in Belgium, Europe.

 

Key job functions include but are not limited to:

  • Operational support for inbound & outbound shipments
  • Identification of root cause corrective actions on disrupted shipments
  • Market research on transportation solutions and knowledge of carrier/forwarder base
  • Co-working with procurement teams on selecting and contracting carriers/forwarders
  • Creation and management of SOP’s on transportation solutions
  • Creation and management of transportation business rules
  • Development of scorecards (KPI’s) and discussion with carriers and forwarders to move the needle
  • Collaboration with other departments within Caterpillar and dealerships to improve quality, velocity and cost of transportation solutions
  • Identification of cost inefficiencies and budget variances, and recommendations to avoid
  • Participation in projects to represent JDC transportation voice
  • Review of transportation processes for continuous improvement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master degree or equivalent through experience
  • Professional experience in logistics: 1-5 years is desired
  • Good business acumen and interest in financials, supply chain and project management.
  • Knowledge of international/domestic transportation operations
  • Notions of 6 Sigma/Lean/Kaizen experience is a plus
  • Team player with good interpersonal skills necessary to liaise and interface with Caterpillar dealers, other Caterpillar departments and external service providers such as Freight Forwarders or Carriers
  • Very good communication skills - both written and verbal in English
  • Computer skills (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Visio)
  • Analytical skills
  • Self-starting and ability to work with limited (remote) support & supervision
