The Resource Industries Division currently has openings for a Supplier Development Engineer located in Mossville, IL, specializing in Electronics and Energy Storage.  As a Buyer with Caterpillar, you will provide purchasing solutions expertise, using Quality, Cost, Logistics, Development, Management to deliver maximum value.

 

As a member of a project team for new product introduction projects you are, together with the other team members, responsible for the delivery of the project on time and in full. You are involved in the project from concept to feasibility to serial production start. The Supplier Development Engineer should provide technical expertise and leadership to Caterpillar’s supply base in the execution of a robust quality plan within the suppler network. In addition, to implement a well-documented continuous quality improvement process and strict process controls. This will be used for the evaluation and development of new and existing suppliers worldwide, to maximizing Quality, Cost, Logistics, Delivery, and Management (QCLDM) within the supply network. To ensure that a supplier can meet corporate and business unit requirements for SQEP certification levels and customer requirements for quality, cost, and delivery of purchased material.

 

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

 

·         Participates in process FMEA for suppliers’ manufacturing processes.  Audits process control implementation and effectiveness.

·         Proactively working with supplier to improve their process capability to instill a “Defect free” culture within the supply base

·         Must have a thorough working knowledge of quality initiatives to ensure that Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) is completed and approved before new parts are delivered.  This includes leadership in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activity. 

·         Reviews APQP documentation (e.g., Process FMEA {failure mode & effects analysis}, Process Control Plans, Gage R&R {repeatability & reproducibility}).

·         Supports and participates in 6 Sigma initiatives with facilities, category teams, and suppliers. The incumbent will collaborate with Buyers to improve supplier cost, quality, and throughput. 

·         Identify and promote new technology opportunities for continuous improvement and cost reductions

·         Promote the highest level of professionalism and business ethics


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

·         Undergraduate degree from a college or university (preferably in engineering) or equivalent experience

·         4-6 years’ experience required in Quality, manufacturing, and/or engineering

·         Familiarity with PFMEAs / APQP / PPAP (Production Part Approval Process)

·         Strong understanding of quality tools, such as 8D, 5 Whys, SPC etc.

·         Ability to read and interpret drawings for manufacturing, component data and specifications.

·         Experience in engineering or manufacturing plus familiarity with manufacturing processes used to produce components and assemblies for electronics manufacturers. 

·         Understanding and exposure of Lean Manufacturing principles

·         Knowledge of shop operations and maintenance procedures is required. 

·         Well-developed interpersonal skills are required in dealing with sensitive issues, developing others, and reaching consensus on specific actions

·         Effective communicator, in written and oral form. Fluent in the English language and preferred other languages. Experience in developing and presenting presentations to upper management or suppliers.

 

 

Top Candidates Will Also Have:                                               

·         Professional certification in Purchasing and/or Inventory Management a plus

·         Strong cost management skills

·         Experience leading organizations or influencing key stakeholders without direct authority. Capability to develop networks involving cross functional/cross division groups and to senior management.

·         Travel: The position may require up to 25% travel time, globally

·         Strong analytical skills in gathering, analyzing, and tracking key market information and trends

·         Educate stakeholders on industry technology of best in class product and category solutions.

·         American Supply Quality (ASQ) quality certification is desired.

·         Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, CAD files, tooling specifications, and electronics specifications.
