Caterpillar Large Power Systems Division (LPSD) designs and manufactures diesel and gas engines ranging from 400 kilowatts to 16 megawatts of power, and the key engine systems such as fuel, air, aftertreatment and cooling which are used to power oil & gas, electric power, marine, rail and Cat machine applications around the world.


Large Power Systems Division currently has an opening for a Quality Engineer located at our Pontiac, IL facility. As a Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting Caterpillar’s Quality Management System for a business division. The incumbent advises operations teams on production and product issues based on customer feedback through investigation, analysis and team leadership to resolve quality issues and drive continuous improvement.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Performs Quality Assurance for a business division by performing product test procedures, validating product specifications, performing audits, and leading product reliability improvements via Caterpillar’s New Product Introduction program and Continuous Product Improvement programs
  • Develops plans and tools to support quality systems and related processes for a business division. The incumbent provides support for quality programs and certifications, as well as Lean Manufacturing and systems implementations
  • Supports business division employees tracking continuous quality improvement projects and a quality scorecard, leading internal quality programs, developing related training programs, conducting internal quality audits and facilitating management reviews
  • Responsible for analyzing all returned field failed materials, performing the required testing to resolve problems and preparing the necessary documentation and reports
  • Responsible for processing all service claims involving failed parts from the field
  • Utilizes failure analysis techniques to determine cause of failure and relays information to Engineering, Manufacturing and Service Engineering
  • Works closely with the above departments with the main objective of providing advice and expertise for resolution of material failure problems
  • Develops and maintains the Decatur warranty claim paperwork system and makes updates as appropriate. This claim system requires maintaining a complete paperwork system for the purpose of handling all formal responses as well as an informal system for hand-carried parts or direct shipped parts from dealer or engineering that requires paper documentation
  • Maintains, calibrates and develops new set-ups and uses for test equipment in the laboratory including the stress analyzer machine which is a prototype for the purpose of stress testing materials
  • Responsible for analyzing test data and distributing metallurgical test reports
  • Coordinates service between the Metallurgical Laboratory and other departments with the purpose of providing advice and expertise on metallurgical testing problems and works with supplier quality, manufacturing and engineering departments in that capacity
  • Reviews and updates test procedures used in the Metallurgical Laboratory and develops new tests and writing procedures as required
  • Writes and provides input for Inspection Instruction Sheets that reflect Caterpillar requirements to suppliers
  • Writes purchase and work orders, provides support documentation to orders and handles routine metallurgical and personnel in absence of Metallurgical Engineering Supervisor.


Basic Requirements:
  • 4-year degree in an engineering or manufacturing-related discipline (or equivalent)
  • 3+ years of previous experience in manufacturing quality

  • Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment and/or in the quality field
  • Ability to effectively train / coach diverse groups about quality concepts, certifications, processes and tools
  • Strong communications, collaboration and influencing skills
  • Ability to work with diverse teams of employees and customers
  • Advanced computer skills
