Job Description



The Commodity Risk Management (CRM) Team under Energy &Transportation Purchasing Division currently has an opening for a Commodity Analyst position. As a Commodity Analyst II, you will work directly with Suppliers, Category Teams, Buyers, Senior Business Resource Managers and the Treasury Risk Management Team to mitigate non-steel commodity price risk. This position plays a key role in improving Caterpillar's Operating Profit After Capital Charge (OPACC) by locking in volatile non-steel commodity prices and layering in coverage to provide assurance of supply and price certainty. This analyst manages two base metal portfolios by utilizing physical commodity agreements to lock in commodity coverage with suppliers. Commodities that this position works with primarily include Aluminum and Copper. This analyst is the subject matter expert on these commodities, provides base metal price guidance, and executes actions to mitigate price risk for these two commodities. This position performs complex analytical tasks, often of a confidential nature in support of category management and/or site management.  


Job Roles and Responsibilities:

This role is responsible and accountable for the analysis, maintenance and interpretation of purchasing and usage data including but not limited to: quotations, consumption, transaction confirmations, commodity forecast, Power of Attorney documents, Supplier Commodity Agreements, supplier data and measurements. This role is responsible for the creation and implementation of local and/or regional commodity strategies, under the direction of his/her Manager.


  • Responsible to provide support as assigned to execute processes and/or deliver project assignments.
  • Collects and analyzes macroeconomic market data, technical indicators, and commodity fundamentals.
  • Provides analysis and recommendations needed to increase accuracy and execution velocity to successfully implement projects on time, within cost, and meet targets.
  • Creates reports for team to accurately and efficiently communicate project and/or operational performance level information.
  • Participates in and leads team meetings and is prepared to provide information to ensure meetings are timely, efficient, and follow agenda.
  • Works with leader to ensure outcomes are consistent with goals.
  • Ensures compliance with CRM Team standard processes.




Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Engineering or Supply Chain. field.
  • 1+ years of previous work experience in purchasing, finance, economics or accounting.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) required.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, good analytical, organizational, and presentation skills. field         
  • Be a self-starter, team player and have the ability to multitask effectively.

  • Demonstrated project management skills and experience with successful projects.

  • Commodity market knowledge.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Power BI.     

Additional Information:

Travel for this position will be 10% or less. field.
