Job Description


At Caterpillar’s Tucson Proving Ground (TPG), we test large mining and heavy construction machines to ensure that we deliver a quality product to our customers. The TPG Instrumentation Team installs and programs data acquisition systems, sensors, and cables (instrumentation) to collect data on our test machines. As an Instrumentation Technician, you will be responsible for planning and executing instrumentation setups containing hundreds of channels on our heavy construction and mining test machines. You will lead a team of technicians on instrumented setups along with working with the engineers to plan the setup and mechanics to execute the setup. You will also follow the test into the field with the engineers and operators to ensure that the channels are functioning properly, the quality of the data remains high, and to repair any channels in the field. You will also be responsible for reviewing standard work documents, and mentor junior technicians. 

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Make safety and health a priority during all work (and home) activities.  Engage in Caterpillar's culture of safety and participate in efforts and activities to continuously improve the safety of operations

  • Lead instrumentation setups on test machines with 100+ channels

  • Participate in process and safety improvement projects within the Instrumentation Team

  • Review and provide feedback on standard work documents for current instrumentation processes

  • Create tools to improve the efficiency and quality of data validation

  • Utilize knowledge of sensors and data analysis to troubleshoot setup issues

  • Provide input to supervisor and team for continuous improvement (CI) and capital projects to improve safety, quality, velocity, and cost.  Aid supervisor in the implementation of other employee’s CI ideas

  • Travel up to 5% to support testing of machines at customer sites around the world.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university
  • 3+ years experience with data acquisition, data analysis, and measurement types

Top candidates will also have:

  • Knowledge of sensor and data acquisition system measurement theory

  • Experience reviewing data for quality and the ability to troubleshoot issues efficiently

  • Strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships with coworkers and customers

  • Product development experience (testing products at the component, system, or machine level)

  • Experience collecting data in the field or at customer sites

  • Experience with the Somat eDAQ data acquisition system

  • Experience with machine level testing

  • Good oral and written communication skills ability to delegate, coach, and mentor coworkers

  • Technical and mechanical aptitude and familiarity with Caterpillar products, services, and policies

  • Experience with Caterpillar’s suite of validation management tools (WorkFlow, IronFlow, others)
