Engineering Internship Program Details:


Caterpillar's Corporate Engineering Intern program is seeking students currently enrolled in a four-year university, to work side by side with engineering professionals to learn and apply themselves on project work within their teams.


Interns are empowered with assignments that provide them with experience and significant opportunities for learning. In addition to this work, Interns are able to network with leaders throughout the company to learn about areas of Caterpillar outside of their assigned team.


Students have the opportunity to deepen their business skills in their assignment through team and/or business partner interactions, develop and conduct presentations, and measuring their success through the performance and evaluation process.


The Aftertreatment Research group is accountable for leading programs to identify, analyze and resolve current issues and provide solutions for future needs in the areas of diesel and natural gas engine exhaust catalytic aftertreatment, with a major focus on technical delivery.  Additionally, this group develops, validates, and deploys high fidelity, predictive Aftertreatment component performance and aging models used in product design, development, and field follow projects.


The intern will define and execute an experimental plan to quantify the performance and Hydrothermal + Sulfur aging characteristics of various Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) materials.  This will require hands-on catalyst sample core preparation, catalyst reactor setup and programming, data processing and incorporation into the existing catalyst model frame work and communicating results to the lead Catalyst Engineer and internal clients.  Additionally, this project may require the design and augmentation of an existing test bench to enable unique catalyst core testing conditions.

Summer 2020 Session: May 18, 2020 – August 7, 2020

This is a 40 hour per week assignment, lasting 12 weeks.

Internship Program Qualifications:
  • Must be enrolled at a 4-year accredited university/college in the following MS/PHD degree program: Chemical Engineering with a focus in Aftertreatment Catalysis
  • Minimum 3.0/4.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (no rounding) at current institution
  • Expected graduation date of August 2020 and beyond
  • Must be able to relocate to Peoria, IL area or indicated work location for duration of internship, and complete daily work commute using reliable transportation.
Top Candidates will also have:
  • Leadership experience
  • Previous technical internship, co-op, or research/relevant experience
  • Involvement in Mini Baja, Formula, 1/4 Scale Tractor, ext. competition teams
