The Lean Advisor is a coach and leader that works across a very diverse portfolio of departments in the order to delivery (OTD) space. Primary responsibilities include being a subject matter expert for lean methods, an advocate for our values in action, provider of management – cultural - and operating system coaching, education, people development, and functions as champion for Caterpillar’s pursuit of Operational Excellence. The Lean Advisor utilizes continuous improvement methodologies, business management skills, and leadership/organizational development philosophies to advance the Caterpillar lean journey.
Lean Advisors must think strategically and be “systems thinkers,” and are called upon to think quickly in a very complex environment that is constantly changing. They will be challenged by Leaders and subject matter experts within the Value Chain as they provide recommendations for the development of business solutions for challenging, complex, and sometimes ambiguous, business problems. They must have the ability to build and maintain credibility with the various Leadership Teams and have the communication skills to articulate clearly to influence leaders with confidence and humility, providing direct feedback and clear communications to develop a shared vision of Lean capabilities needed. In addition, they must be able to describe the business strategies, processes and activities that will move the Value Chain from the current state to the end state.
It is vital for a Lean Advisors’ coaching style to be strategic, collaborative and facilitative, rather than directive. They must be able to work with diverse teams and communicate effectively with both leaders and others in the organization, possessing / building credibility and relationships throughout the journey. Humility and a continuous learning mindset are key within this role.
A Lean Advisor must be a results-oriented change agent with significant OTD background and experience. They must have the ability to learn while leading others.
Lean Advisors must have strong credibility in operations facilities and be capable of building and maintaining positive relationships through the duration of the Lean engagement. They must be able to influence senior leaders by making a creditable case for change based on their experience and Lean technical capabilities.
This position will manage projects related to process transformations using lean methodologies and deploying change management as part of the project management responsibilities.
The incumbent will lead revolutionary change across the enterprise by diagnosing complex business problems and providing recommended treatment plans to accelerate business improvements through the implementation of Lean Principles. Lean Advisors integrate Lean deployments with other business activities, improvement projects, and enterprise business strategies. Incumbent must also independently manage Lean Deployments with key elements of the extended value stream which includes suppliers and transactional support processes. Lean Advisors are accountable to report results to their Lean Director.
Lean Advisor provide progress updates to senior leadership and process owners to ensure they are informed of project status. Lean Advisors provide cross-functional technical expertise to functional teams in the deployment of Lean to drive process transformation aligned with business specific improvement strategies.
Lean Six Sigma Certification preferred.
Eight (8) years equivalent experience leading continuous improvement work in lean manufacturing, service or healthcare industry required.
Proficient computer skills using up to date technology and information systems (including Microsoft Office Suite, Visio, project, simulation, and Minitab (or equivalent).
Advanced Lean training preferred.
Five (5) years of day to day application of the lean methodology or business analytics, consulting, planning, and/or finance.
Use of statistical analysis, and business development; Competent in at least three of the following skillsets: Toyota Production System (TPS), Lean, Six Sigma, project management; and/or ISO; in addition, two (2) years of people management, operations management, training and facilitation.
