The principal responsibility of this Data Scientist position is to learn and contribute to projects as part of the Large Power System Engineering Analytics team, focused on developing large data set driven engine failure detection algorithms.  One is expected to gain an understanding of Caterpillar’s business, products, data from machines and engines, systems and procedures; to learn and develop skills which result from the practical application of analytical knowledge; and to aid a project team or others in the work group. Projects work results will affect existing Caterpillar engine product or be deployed in Caterpillar dealer and/or customer facing subscription engine monitoring services.  Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: working with engine experts to determine failure signatures, codifying failure signatures, verifying work results and quality, locating and obtaining data from various internal and external sources; collecting requirements; applying associated digital technologies; communicating with internal customers, team members, and stake holders; answering routine requests for information/analysis; and providing support to the teams on which he or she serves. Work is closely directed by a project team leader and supervisor, with regular reviews and updates.

 

Job Duties:

  • Build models in python code to using data from machines and engines to identify failure patterns

  • Design, develop, and maintain performance and scalable analytical solutions

  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual and repeatable processes, optimizing data delivery and usage, maintaining reusable approaches for greater scalability

  • Perform validation of models and statistical techniques of solutions

  • Create solutions and methods to monitor systems and solutions

  • Engage directly with business partners to participate in design and development of solutions per requirements

  • Engage and actively seek industry perspectives

  • Employee is also responsible for performing other job duties as assigned by Caterpillar management 

Qualifications

Job Duties:

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS Mechanical, Electrical, or Similar Engineering Degree

  • Must have a minimum of two completed projects (academic or industry) using Python

  • Understanding of SQL, ETL design, and data modeling techniques

  • GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • MS in Applied Analytics

  • Experience working with Git for Version Control

  • Highly organized with extreme attention to detail

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and adept at working across organizational boundaries

  • Ability to collaborate successfully and when needed the ability to advocate their needs within the team.

  • Ability to convey and communicate their findings effectively to technical and non-technical audiences

  • Curious, probing and skeptical aptitude with a willingness to experiment and dissect analytical questions in a practical and objective way

  • Experience in approved enterprise data platform or qualified to be trained on the approved enterprise data platform (AWS)
