This job opening is for a senior electrical/electronic component development engineer within Caterpillar’s Innovation & Technology Development Division. The candidate will be a member of the team responsible for world wide design control of primary and secondary operator control components used in the cabs of Caterpillar machines. A primary control is an electronic joystick or lever used by the operator for steering, implement, and/or directional control of a machine. Secondary controls are keypads and rotary dials used by the operator to turn various machine functions on/off (ie. lights, wiper system) or to control parameters such as throttle speed or to navigate a cursor and complete menu selections on an electronic display.
These components are primarily purchased finished and utilize a wide range of product & process technologies. Supplier, client, and project management are key elements of this position. The candidate will manage development of new products by leveraging standardized product development processes (ie. APQP) for specification, sourcing, design & process verification, and production launch. The engineer will also be responsible for a family or sub-family of products and will manage all new application requests, quality & cost improvement projects, and work necessary to ensure continuity of supply. All aspects of the engineer’s role require a strong focus on product & customer safety. The position will require collaboration with a global supply base, purchasing, product support, the product legacy team, industrial & cab design, parts marketing, electronic system & sub-system teams, machine groups, and component process partners in China. The incumbent will assist with the development and execution of product line management and sourcing strategies aimed at providing clients with a preferred set of parts that can be leveraged into multiple applications and yield the benefits of enhanced cost/quality. Specific job activities include requirements development, supplier selection, project management, validation planning/execution, stakeholder review preparation & delivery, field and factory problem resolution, and cost reduction project leadership.
