Robotics Perception Senior Software Engineer




Caterpillar’s Innovation and Technology Development Division is currently seeking a Robotics Perception Software Engineer at its Pittsburgh Automation Center in Pittsburgh, PA. In this role you will work on the exciting and technically challenging Automation Systems Development team.  This team is responsible for developing and demonstrating automation technologies, which are often used in conjunction with information systems, remote control, semi autonomous, and fully autonomous machine control systems. In this role you will focus on the development and application of perception technologies and systems. 




Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:


  • Research and develop new technology in perception
  • Develop perception software for personnel detect, object detection, tracking, classification, terrain mapping, localization and others
  • Solving analytical problems and debugging software
  • Lead development of autonomous simulation, modeling and test environments for perception
  • Communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units
    Participate in R&D programs through entire lifecycle, from initial inception through production and maintenance phases
  • Up to 5% travel may be required














Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Computer Vision, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • Bachelor’s degree with 6 years or Master’s degree with 3 years industry experience with design and development of embedded software applications
  • Strong hands-on programming skills in C++
  • Experience developing software interfacing with perception components such as cameras, lidars, and radars
  • Proficiency in the use various flavors of Linux operating system
  • US driver’s license

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Experience with off-road vehicle robotic systems and software development
  • Experience in developing embedded computational platforms including hardware accelerated platforms such as FPGAs, GPUs, and real-time CPUs
  • Experience in setting up simulation and test environments for embedded applications
  • Programming of Computer vision/perception Systems software that integrates with perception sensors such as Cameras, Lidar, Radar
  • Experience in field robotics, image processing, and implementing perception algorithms on hardware platforms
  • Experience with Computer vision and Machine Learning algorithms
  • Matlab/Simulink experience is a plus
  • GIT version control experience
  • Must have strong mathematics skills
  • Demonstrated working experience on a team
