The Product Support & Logistics Division currently has an opening for a Lean Chief of Staff in our Peoria, IL facility. 


JOB PURPOSE:  The Lean Chief of Staff for SD&D is a trusted advisor to the Lean Director and meets with the SD&D Lean Director as often as practical to set priorities and review and prepare for upcoming commitments.   


It is critical that this position have a solid understanding of Lean and how to apply in all areas of the business.  It is also critical that the person in this position has a broad understanding of Caterpillar, a good understanding of the Corporate Strategy, and is up to date on the topical issues of the day inside SD&D. 


JOB DUTIES: This is a highly strategic role that relies on effective networking and exceptional interpersonal skills; there isn’t a functional team within the enterprise that the Chief of Staff does not interact with. The success of this role requires regular interaction with all functional teams within SD&D. This position will work closely with each of the Divisional Lean representatives, OPACC Improvement Agenda owners, and communications team within SD&D.  


Three core areas of responsibility include: 

  1. Support Lean deployment within each SD&D Division

  2. Monitor overall SD&D lean deployment and provide required reporting and communications

  3. Coordinate Operations Strategy and Execution for Steel Products


The SD&D Lean Chief of Staff is diligently focused on delivery and execution relying on their strategic perspective to assure the most relevant outcome and impact.


Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


Support Lean Deployment across the SD&D Segment

  • Planning – Help teams identifying areas to deploy Lean

  • Training – Supporting the training of the leaders and facilitators within each division

  • Communications – Support HR in delivering a consistent communications message

  • Governance – Help divisions integrate lean into their existing governance processes 

  • Facilitation – Support execution of Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Rapid Improvement Workshops (RIWs) / Kaizen events.

Monitor Overall Lean Deployment and provide required Governance and Communications 

  • Develop SD&D material for EO updates

  • Provide monthly updates for Group President and Vice Presidents on progress and successes

  • Monitor overall deployment & execution of Lean within SD&D

Coordinate Operations Strategy for Steel Products 

  • Develop and document overall strategy

  • Facilitate sessions to revisit strategy, gather feedback on status, re-validation of priorities 

  • Ensure strategy owners provide status updates on key actions and metrics progress

  • Work with the Divisional Communicator to provide regular updates

  • Manage monthly governance meetings and bi-weekly staff meetings

  • Support submission of Excellence Awards



Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience with Lean
  • 3+ years project management experience
  • Previous leadership experience

  • Understanding of and credibility in the field of engineering, operations, distribution and supply chain
  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and analytical skills; the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit motivated by problem-solving
  • MBA or Master's degree
