Job Description


Caterpillar’s Innovation and Technology Development Division is currently seeking a Robotics Perception Software Engineer at its Pittsburgh Automation Center in Pittsburgh, PA. In this role you will work on the exciting and technically challenging Automation Systems Development team.  This team is responsible for developing and demonstrating automation technologies, which are often used in conjunction with information systems, remote control, semi-autonomous, and fully autonomous machine control systems.  In this role you will focus on the development and application of perception technologies and systems. 

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Research and develop new technology in computer vision, perception for semi-autonomous and autonomous machines
  • Develop perception algorithms for personnel detect, object detection, tracking, classification, terrain mapping, localization and others
  • Solving analytical problems and debugging software
  • Communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units
  • Participate in R&D programs through entire lifecycle, from initial inception through production and maintenance phases
  • Some travel to Caterpillar proving grounds and customer sites required.


Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Computer Vision, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, or related field
  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 years or Master’s degree in design, development, or programming of computer vision, perception systems software that integrates with perception sensors such as Cameras, Lidar, Radar
  • Experience with Computer vision and Machine Learning algorithms
  • Strong hands-on programming skills in Matlab, C, C++, CUDA
  • Experience working with NVIDIA GPUs and Xilinx FPGAs
  • Experience in using these matlab tool boxes – image processing/computer vision
  • Proficiency with Linux operating system

Top Candidates will also have:

  • ROS, QNX, Python, OpenCV, Keras, Tensorflow experience is a plus
  • Experience in field robotics, image processing, and implementing perception algorithms on hardware platforms
  • Experience in developing embedded computational platforms including hardware accelerated platforms such as FPGAs, GPUs, and real-time CPUs
  • GIT version control experience
  • Must have strong mathematics skills
  • Demonstrated working experience on a team 
  • Experience mentoring young engineers
