As a product development engineer, you might research emerging technologies, design new machines and engines, create software solutions, or test and validate product designs.

The Large Power System Division currently has a Validation Engineer located in Lafayette, IN. In this role, you will successfully direct and participate in the concept and design of complex engineering product or process projects for release to production in a manner to ensure products provide superior performance, durability, quality, and serviceability.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • This position represents the journey level position within design engineering. The key role of a Validation Engineer is that of contributor to the planning and delivery of a project. This position will be accountable for contributing to the concept, development, and design of complex components, subsystems, or processes. This position performs complex analysis work, identifies design problems, and resolves problems. Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to team leadership, the major focus of the job is on technical delivery. Incumbents may work more directly with different units, suppliers, customers, and/or other teams. This requires the ability to communicate technical information in a concise and accurate manner. Decisions made may affect the project team and its delivery of the project. Decisions may significantly impact on negotiations with suppliers, leveraging new technologies, warranty, costs, sales, and customer perception.
  • Success factors for the Validation Engineer include demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of engineering concepts. Major challenges facing incumbents are meeting goals for cost, reliability, and performance, and managing multiple priorities. This position must keep up-to-date on changing customer needs as the project progresses, stay current with new technology, and provide guidance and direction on the project to less experienced engineers, technologists, and technicians. Incumbents may be expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery.
  • Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following:  evaluate new products or processes; perform product maintenance; keep up to date on new technologies or develop new technologies; communicate technical information to customers, team members, suppliers and other units; and support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and suppliers.
  • Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. Development requirements include practical application of theory, knowledge of the NPI process, and communication skills.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: 
  • BS in Engineering and/or Technology an accredited university
  • Experience with dSPACE Control Desk and Automation Desk 

  • Experience with Vector Tools (CANape, CANalyzer, etc)

  • Experience developing and validating software 

 
Top Candidates will also have:
  • 5+ years' experience with engine performance development
  • Professional Experience with industrial spark ignited gaseous fueled engines
  • Engine performance testing experience
  • Engine performance simulation experience with GT Power or similar
  • A flexibility and willingness to manage multiple projects concurrently 
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work complex projects with many inputs and the ability to define actionable plans
  • Deep understanding the Caterpillar NPI process
  • Passion to learn and grow as a leader
  • Experience with multiple programs using the NTI process
  • Good interpersonal, teamwork and collaboration skills
